The applicable Polish Citizenship Act provides for 4 ways to acquire it:

  • granting Polish citizenship – upon a request addressed to the President of the Republic of Poland, submitted through a consul in the case where the foreigner is not a legal resident in Poland, or through the competent voivode, if the foreigner is a legal resident in the Republic of Poland,
  • recognition as a Polish citizen – upon request addressed to the competent voivode for the foreigner’s place of residence in Poland, only in the case of holding permanent residence in Poland,
  • reinstating Polish citizenship – upon a request addressed to the Minister of the Interior, submitted by a foreigner who lost Polish citizenship before 1 January 1999,
  • confirmation of holding Polish citizenship – upon request addressed to the competent voivode for the last place of residence of the foreigner in Poland, submitted by persons holding Polish citizenship, who for various reasons do not have an identity document.
